> Early Care and Education - Success Stories

It’s one thing to measure success by percentages and numbers, and quite another to measure success through the eyes of those who care for a small child.

The Collaboration Council prides itself in measuring success both ways-by data and by stories from real-life experiences.

Here, we share one family’s story.

Home Visits Help Teenage Mother

Rosie, a single, teen mom, has been struggling with depression.  Still, this high school senior with an eight-month-old baby plans to graduate this year.

Despite all the pressures on her, Rosie is learning to parent well thanks to her positive relationship with a Family Support Worker (FSW) from Healthy Families Montgomery, a home visiting service.

The worker shows Rosie how to encourage her baby’s growth—physically, emotionally and socially. As a result, the child is developing well in all areas and is advanced for her age.

One area that Rosie and her parenting helper have been working on is language development. The family support worker uses music with mom and baby as a fun way to stimulate language development. The baby enjoys these activities and can dance and sing along with the songs. As a natural outcome, the baby’s vocabulary is expanding.

Rosie is gaining confidence as a parent. Acting on a suggestion from her FSW, she recently went to a local thrift store to buy more sing-along videos to play with the child to help her develop and grow.

This personal attention to Rosie is also helpful support as she gets closer to her high school graduation day.
