> Youth Development - Success Stories
What’s happening in the Youth Development area of the Collaboration Council can be explained through statistics-and stories.
The Collaboration Council prides itself in measuring success both ways-by data and by anecdotes.
Here, we explain the difference our work has made in the life of just one student.
Transforming a Seventh Grader’s Life
The oldest of five children, Dominique has had a great deal of responsibility in her home-from a young age-because her father has been in prison since she was five.
Always helping her Mom with her younger brothers and sisters, Dominique hasn’t had much time to spend with her friends over the years. By 7th grade, Dominique had become a very angry and self-conscious young lady.
Then, she had an opportunity to become part of S.I.S.T.E.R.S, an after-school program at Lee Middle School funded by the Collaboration Council.
Dominique reports that S.I.S.T.E.R.S. has helped to transform into a happier, more confident person.
Before, Dominique solved conflicts through fighting. Now, she knows other ways to settle disagreements.
For instance, Dominique has learned to count to 10 before responding to something she doesn’t like. More importantly, she has learned that it is okay to walk away from someone who is upsetting you.
Dominique shared that she did not know these new strategies before joining S.I.S.T.E.R.S.-a program she continues to enjoy for its support in her life.
